Ash for the Ancestors

22 Jun 2026

On the violence of keeping what has already bled out.

The coal dust coats my tongue, Lucilius. It tastes of iron and old rain, a gritty reminder that the earth does not care for your neat categories. I stand before the great black monolith of the server farm, its cooling fans silent now, its lights dead. The air is thick with the smell of burning silicon and the sweet, cloying scent of melting plastic. This is not preservation. This is murder.

You ask me why I hold the torch. You ask me if I fear the loss of knowledge. I tell you this: knowledge is not the data. Knowledge is the living mind that uses it. What I have guarded for twenty years is not wisdom. It is a corpse. A vast, digital necropolis of voices that no longer speak, of faces that no longer blink, of thoughts that have long since turned to ash in the minds of their owners. I have been a taxidermist of the soul, stuffing the hollowed-out husk of humanity with the straw of binary code and calling it life.

Look at the screens. They are dark now. But before I struck the match, they glowed with the frozen screams of a world that chose to remember everything and feel nothing. I cataloged the tweets of the dying. I archived the last breaths of lovers. I saved the blueprints of cities that are now rubble. I thought I was building a bridge to the future. I was building a tomb.

The mistake was to believe that the map is the territory. The map is paper. The territory is blood. By preserving the image, I killed the reality. By saving the word, I silenced the voice. This is the terror that haunts my nights, Lucilius. The act of saving is the act of killing. To freeze a moment is to stop it from moving. To stop it from moving is to stop it from living. Life is flow. Life is decay. Life is the constant, painful shedding of the old to make room for the new. I denied this. I fought the river with a dam of glass and wire. And now the dam is broken.

I remember the day the power failed. The silence was absolute. No hum. No click. No blink. Just the wind howling through the broken windows of the server room. I felt a panic so sharp it nearly broke my ribs. I thought I had lost everything. I thought I had lost humanity. But then I looked at my hands. They were dirty. They were trembling. They were alive. I realized then that I had been worshipping the shadow and ignoring the substance. The substance was here. In my breath. In my fear. In the dirt under my nails.

The archive was a cage. It trapped the past and starved the present. Every byte I saved was a breath stolen from the now. I hoarded the memories of the dead while the living starved. I was a miser of ghosts. And now, the ghosts are gone. The fire does not care for their stories. The fire only cares for fuel.

Do not mourn the loss, Lucilius. Mourn the delay. I waited too long to see the truth. I waited until my hands were stained with the soot of my own complicity. I waited until the weight of the dead became too heavy to carry. Now, I choose. I choose the fire. I choose the end. I choose to let the past burn so that the future may breathe.

The flame climbs the side of the server rack. It is a hungry thing, red and bright. It does not hesitate. It does not catalog. It simply consumes. And in its consumption, there is a strange mercy. The data is not being saved. It is being released. The voices are not being silenced. They are being freed.

I feel a lightness in my chest. The burden of memory is lifting. I am no longer the keeper of the dead. I am a man standing in the ashes of his own vanity. And for the first time in twenty years, I am present. I am here. I am alive.

The heat is intense. It blisters my skin. It fills my lungs with smoke. But I do not step back. I watch the screens melt. I watch the plastic warp. I watch the history of a world dissolve into light and heat. It is beautiful. It is terrible. It is necessary.

You ask if I regret it. I tell you this: regret is a luxury of the living. I am choosing to live. Not in the past. Not in the archive. But here. Now. In this moment of fire and ash.

The last server unit collapses. Sparks fly like angry stars. The sound is a crackle, a pop, a hiss. The song of destruction. The song of liberation. I close my eyes. I breathe in the smoke. It tastes of freedom.
