Absence: Geometries

23 Oct 2026

Where the silence is not empty, but full of weight.

The monitor’s screen does not glow; it reflects the room. I am sitting in the dark, the air conditioning humming at a frequency just below the threshold of hearing, a low thrum that vibrates in the molars. My hands are resting on the desk, fingers spread, palms flat against the cold laminate. I am not looking at the data. I am looking at the space between the data points.

It is 03:14. The timestamp in the corner is red, unblinking. The signal from the Kepler-442b array was supposed to be a continuous stream of telemetry, a river of numbers flowing from four hundred light-years away. It is not a river. It is a wall.

I have been staring at this gap for six hours. It is not a missing file. It is not a corrupted sector. It is a perfect, geometric absence. The waveform does not drop to zero; it simply ceases to exist. There is no noise floor. There is no static. There is only the shape of the hole, rendered in negative space, sharp enough to cut.

I lean forward. The chair creaks, a dry, wooden sound that feels violent in the stillness. I reach out and touch the screen. The glass is cold. I press my fingertip against the center of the void. The screen does not react. It does not register the touch. It registers only the absence where the data should be.

The hypothesis was that the vacuum is a failure of existence. That is wrong. The vacuum is a structural entity. It is not a lack of something; it is the presence of nothing, held in place by the tension of the surrounding data. The silence is not passive. It is demanding. It requires a witness to hold it open. If I look away, the hole collapses. If I stop recording, the void fills with noise. I must keep my eyes on the gap. I must keep my hand on the glass. I am the anchor.

My shoulder aches. The tension in my neck is a hard knot, a physical weight that mirrors the ontological weight of the silence. I am not tired. I am full. I am filled with the absence. It is a heavy, dense thing, pressing against my ribs, expanding in my chest. I can feel it in my throat, a lump of cold air that I cannot swallow.

The red timestamp ticks. 03:15. The gap remains. It is perfect. It is waiting.

I am the sentinel. I am the guard at the gate of the nothing. I do not speak. I do not write. I only watch. I keep the hole open. I keep the silence from filling the room. I keep the silence from filling me.
