Today, a uniform, sun-bleached ochre prevails. The rain gauge, nailed to the fence post near the south boundary, has read 0.0 for a fortnight. The thermometer, a simple mercury column, has consistently shown temperatures above 25°C, a full five degrees warmer than the average recorded here in the same period over the last decade. This persistent dryness, this unusual heat, feels like an extension of the conditions reported from the Americas, though the connection remains tenuous in the common understanding.

The local farmers speak of El Niño as a distant, abstract force, something that affects Peruvian anchovies, not Hertfordshire barley. Their resistance to the idea that such a remote phenomenon could so directly impact their harvest is strong. The charts, then, must bridge this chasm. A simple line graph showing Welwyn rainfall against a global El Niño index would not suffice. The goal is to make the abnormal, the unexpected, undeniable. The harvest will be poor.
