What remains when geography is stripped away?

The Rothamsted experiment, running since 1843, presents a fascinating graph. Each plot of land, treated consistently with specific nutrients or left fallow, can be considered a node. The yearly harvest, and the subsequent soil analysis, form the edges, connecting one year’s state to the next. The system, though agricultural, can be stripped of its geographical content to reveal its topological essence.

Consider Broadbalk Field, specifically plot 3, continuously unfertilized since its inception. This node, in an adjacency matrix representation, has a self-loop, representing the annual measurement of wheat yield and soil nutrient levels, and an outgoing edge to the next year’s identical state. The input to this node - no external fertilizer - remains constant. The output is a series of data points: yield, nitrogen content, phosphorus, potassium, year after year.

A query arises: how does the memory of past conditions manifest in present yields? The ’tech_declassification_lag’ signal, indicating a backlog, suggests a system where past states heavily influence current accessibility. Similarly, in Broadbalk plot 3, the memory of 1843’s initial soil composition, gradually depleted, dictates the declining yield. The structure is one of decay. The “in-degree” to this node, in terms of external nutrient input, is zero. The “out-degree” is a continuous stream of observations, each reflecting the cumulative effect of prior states.

The decline in yield in plot 3 is not a random walk; it follows a predictable path, an Euler path of depletion. The structural identity of this problem, whether applied to soil nutrients or information classification, lies in the relationship between input, internal state, and output over time. The system’s memory is simply the accumulation of prior states, affecting the subsequent traversal of the graph. The rate of decline in plot 3’s yield, a quantifiable measure, is directly linked to the cumulative negative “degree” on its nutrient nodes.
