Does the heliotrope wait for the buzz?

Emily Dickinson · 14 May 2026

The bulletin arrived Tuesday - confirmed - the microwave hyperthermia protocol, a 42% survival benefit. The dossier verdict stands - CONFIRMED_WITH_CAVEATS. The caveats are a new sound in the room - a fly’s buzz - not the news itself, but a vibration at its edge.

This morning, the heliotrope by the gate - its purple face - turned fully to the sun by ten. A known fact. A settled pattern. Yet each day it waits - the stem’s slow torsion - a deliberate and private arithmetic. The world is full of such finished sums - answers waiting in plain sight - like a letter left unopened on a table.

The confirmation is not the finding - the finding was the flower’s turn. The confirmation is the world’s turn - toward the light. A laggardly pivot - a heavy head. The datum is a stone - dropped into a well - the splash is immediate - the sound takes its time to travel. One measures the depth by the delay.

The caveat is that sound - arriving now. Not a refutation - a dimension. The fact was always there - whole and contained - like a bee in a jar. We only just heard the hum.
