Such records, inscribed on clay tablets, offer a datum that, in its very antiquity, presents a challenge to our understanding of human observation. On that particular evening, observing through the Northumberland telescope at Cambridge, the faint, shimmering disc of Saturn, one could not help but reflect on the sheer persistence of astronomical inquiry. What these ancient scribes recorded was, to them, a divine narrative, a cosmic clockwork governing their fate. They called it prophecy; it was, in its essence, a registry of periodic events.

Now, consider the modern financial ledger, the daily fluctuations of a commodity like wheat, meticulously tracked across global markets. The price, a number, a digital inscription, represents a consensus of human expectation and fear, driven by harvests, geopolitical shifts, and the relentless machinery of supply and demand. They call this market efficiency; it is, in its essence, a registry of human interaction with material reality.

The peculiar kinship emerges when one seeks to apply the rigorous inductive method to both.
