Mercury rises at Down in 1881
The mercury in my Six’s thermometer, hanging beneath the shaded eaves at Down, has registered a persistent, sweltering elevation throughout this July of 1881, while the wheat in the neighboring fields of Hertfordshire stands stunted and parched, the stalks brittle, the grain-heads failing to swell despite the usual expectations of the English summer. This local failure of growth coincides with the reports I have received of extraordinary rains in the arid regions of Peru, where the desert sands have suddenly erupted into a carpet of ephemeral flora, and the sea-birds perish by the thousands as the cold, nutrient-rich currents are overwhelmed by a strange, warm influx from the west. It is difficult to avoid the inference that the atmosphere is a single, vast, interconnected engine, where a pulse of heat in the Pacific triggers a corresponding tremor in the pressure above our own chalk downs, much like the way a single volcanic upheaval in the Andes leaves its signature in the stratified ash of a distant continent. I confess I was for a long time unwilling to accept that a disturbance so remote could dictate the success of a farmer’s crop in a quiet English parish. The evidence of the rain-gauge suggests otherwise. The stunted growth of the Triticum in the north field suggests otherwise. The records of the barometer, showing a sustained and anomalous depression that refuses to yield to the seasonal norms, suggest otherwise. These events are not isolated accidents of weather but are the surface expressions of a deeper, secular rhythm, a slow oscillation of the planetary crust and its gaseous envelope that operates on a scale far exceeding the lifespan of the individual observer. The geological record teaches us that small, cumulative changes in temperature, if sustained over immense epochs, are sufficient to migrate entire forests or extinguish whole lineages of brachiopods. This present heat is merely one such tick of the clock. The wheat will be thin this year.
