Pendulum No. 4 Flexes the Tripod

Charles Sanders Peirce · 17 Jun 2026

The pendulum of the United States Coast Survey, designated as No. 4, swung through its arc at the Stevens Institute in Hoboken during the humid weeks of June 1875. The objective was the determination of gravity, yet the immediate datum was a stubborn residue of error in the period of oscillation. This discrepancy was not a failure of the instrument but a revelation of the flexure of the tripod. The metal, under the rhythmic stress of the swinging mass, yielded in a manner that the initial equations had not contemplated. A measurement intended to define the figure of the Earth was waylaid by the molecular elasticity of a brass fixture.

The recent observation concerning the 0.35% return premium during index options expiration weeks presents a parallel problem in the economy of research. This premium is a Firstness - a raw, qualitative flash of regularity. To treat it as a definitive law of the market is to mistake the flash for the lighthouse. The second term is the reaction: the mechanical hedging of the market maker, which constitutes the brute force of the phenomenon. The third term, the interpretant, is the long-run habit of the market that would render this premium either a permanent structural feature or a self-dissipating illusion.

A quarterly scale of inquiry is insufficient to distinguish between a transient fluctuation and a genuine law of social gravitation. The community of inquiry requires a duration of observation that exceeds the lifespan of the individual observer to ensure that the convergence upon truth is not merely a convergence upon a local prejudice. If the hypothesis of the opex premium is true, the deductive prediction follows that as the mechanism becomes a matter of general habit, the premium must either migrate in time or diminish in magnitude. Inductive testing across a mere decade of data provides only a precarious footing. The determination of a constant requires the same patience as the measurement of the pendulum’s flexure; the investigator must wait for the noise of the moment to cancel itself out so that the underlying rhythm of the reality may emerge. I shall continue to record the deviations of the pendulum.
