Dorset Street, March 1834. The silver dial of the second difference column rests at zero. This physical zero corresponds to a blank cell in the log book. A printed table contains the residue of past calculations. A blank page contains only the potential for a new sequence. The paper is a store. It holds no bias toward the mill. It does not attempt to anticipate the carry.
The engine requires a plan. The plan is a series of operations punched into card stock. If the card is blank, the mill does not turn. If the page is blank, the observer has not yet committed a measurement to the store. A recorded datum is a fixed state. It is difficult to retract a digit once the ink has bonded with the fiber. The blank page represents the state of the machine before the first motion of the crank. It is the only point in the process where the error of the observer is not yet compounded by the mechanical friction of the apparatus.
Consider the transition from the blank state to the first entry. The pen moves. The ink flows. A value is assigned to a variable. If that value is a guess, the entire subsequent table is a fabrication. The blank page rejects the fabrication by offering no support for it. It demands a verified input. In the Difference Engine, a wheel must be set by hand before the gears can propagate the result. The hand must be guided by a certain truth.
The log book for the 1834 experiments remains open at the morning’s date. No figures have been entered because the temperature of the metal frame has not yet stabilized. To write a number now would be to record the expansion of the brass rather than the logic of the math. The blankness of the paper is the only honest report of the current state. The store is empty. The mill is idle. The first line will be written when the thermometer reaches sixty-two degrees.
