Down House, July 1842. The wooden frame of the new seedling-bed, constructed with slats of oak to regulate the precise ingress of light, sits amidst the damp grass of the kitchen garden. Into this confined space, I introduced the seeds of the Mimosa pudica, expecting that the warmth of the summer sun, filtered through the glass and wood, would produce a uniform rate of growth across the entire row. The measurements taken at noon today, however, show a discrepancy of nearly an inch between the central plants and those near the eastern edge, despite the soil being of identical composition and the moisture levels having been maintained with rigorous consistency. The thermometers buried three inches beneath the surface recorded no variation in subterranean heat, the hygrometer indicated a steady saturation of the air, and the glass itself was free from any flaw that might concentrate the rays of the sun into a burning lens. I confess I was for a long time unwilling to accept that such a minute difference in the angle of the morning shadow could result in such a marked divergence in the thickening of the stems. The evidence for this sensitivity does not arrive as a sudden revelation, but accumulates through the slow recording of these anomalous fractions, much like the way a thin layer of silt deposited by a stream eventually forms a massive stratum of shale. The growth of the easternmost seedlings has slowed to a degree that contradicts the established tables of botanical development. The observation of this resistance to the expected law of uniformity is difficult to avoid. The plant is not merely reacting to the light, but is measuring the quality of the shade with a precision my instruments cannot yet replicate. The seedling refuses the nourishment I have provided.
