The steel dissecting needle, worn down by twenty years of scraping the calcareous plates of Balanus and Pollicipes at my study table in Down House, possesses a curve at its tip that no new instrument from the London shops could possibly replicate. A fresh needle, straight and sharp, meets the resistance of a shell with a rigid, uncompromising point that often shatters the very suture I wish to trace, whereas this blunted tool, shaped by the thousands of minute frictions of my own hand against the stubborn lime of the Cirripedia, seems to find the hidden fault lines of the organism with an instinct of its own. It has lost its factory luster, becoming dull and slightly pitted where the acidic secretions of the specimens have bit into the metal, yet it is precisely this degradation that allows it to slide into the hinge of a sessile barnacle without the violent rupture that a more perfect edge would command. The evidence for the slow modification of parts does not arrive through the sudden acquisition of a new faculty, but rather through the gradual attrition of the old, just as the strata of the Andes reveal their secrets only after the softer rock has been scoured away by the relentless action of the elements. I confess I was for a long time unwilling to accept that a tool could become more efficacious by losing its original form, preferring to believe that precision was a function of the manufacturer’s intent rather than the user’s history. The needle, however, proves the contrary, having been ground into a shape that conforms to the specific geometry of the shells it has opened, much as the beak of a finch is ground by the specific resistance of the seeds it must crack to survive. The straight line is an abstraction of the workshop; the curve is the reality of the work. The metal has been taught by the specimen. This particular needle will be used for the final series of dissections tonight.
