The copper wires of the self-registering anemometer at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, remained stubbornly taut during the gale of October 1837, yet the trace on the paper disc refused the expected parabolic curve. This discrepancy is what the observers call an error of instrument. An error of instrument is a convenient label for a failure of our expectations to govern the world; I suspect it is instead a failure of our nomenclature to account for the fluid turbulence of the atmosphere. We have long assumed that wind is a simple vector, a direction coupled with a magnitude, but this single jagged line suggests a secondary oscillation, a shuddering of the air that exists beneath the resolution of our current definitions.

What we now call a steady breeze was, before this scrutiny, merely a lack of chaos. The data from the 12th of October shows a persistent deviation that does not vanish when averaged against the readings from the 13th. If this were a mere fluke of the mechanism, the law of large numbers would eventually smooth the jagged peaks into a recognizable mean. Instead, the deviation hardens. It resists the induction ladder. To climb from the observation of a gust to the pattern of a storm, and finally to the consilience of a theory of fluid dynamics, one must account for this residue. The stubbornness of the trace is a physical protest against the geometry we have imposed upon it.

If this friction between the air and the copper vane is a true property of the medium, it should predict a corresponding vibration in the barometric pressure that no one has yet thought to measure in synchrony. The current theory explains the storm we saw, but it fails to explain the specific way the instrument trembled before the rain began. I will move the apparatus to the west turret to see if the masonry itself is contributing a harmonic. If the deviation persists in the new location, I must conclude that the air possesses a property of internal shearing for which we have no name. I have requested the logs from the previous three years to see if this ghost in the copper has appeared during every equinox.
