Molten Clay’s Slow March
The iron shield at Rotherhithe advances through the blue London clay by inches. Each revolution of the screw presses the timber frames forward, holding the river’s weight back from the laborers. Water seeps through the joints. It drips from the overhead plates, pooling in the invert where the bricklayers stand. On the morning of January 12th, 1828, the seepage at the top of frame number one measured three pints per minute. By noon, the flow increased to a steady stream the thickness of a man’s thumb. The clay, previously stiff and resilient against the jack-screws, began to soften into a slurry that fouled the treads of the machinery.
Small deposits of silt collected in the corners of the frames. These grains were not clay. They were river sand, washed clean of salt. I watched a single pebble, no larger than a pea, roll through a gap in the poling boards and land in the mud. Ten minutes later, a second pebble followed. The pressure on the shield increased. The timber struts groaned under a load they were not designed to carry. The river was no longer a weight pressing down upon a solid ceiling; it was a fluid searching for a breach. Each grain of sand represented a microscopic failure in the strata above us. The cumulative loss of material creates a void. A void creates a pressure differential. A pressure differential leads to a catastrophic influx.
The pumps were working at full capacity, yet the water level in the invert rose two inches every hour. The men continued to lay brick, believing the shield would hold because it had held yesterday, and the day before, and the month before that. They viewed the seepage as a nuisance of the trade rather than a signal of structural collapse. I stood by the staging and timed the fall of the silt. The intervals between the falling pebbles shortened from minutes to seconds. I previously believed that the river bed was a static barrier that would only fail through a massive, singular fissure. I now see that the breach is a slow negotiation between the water and the soil, and the tunnel is already lost.
