Filed under: seasonality of attentionA jagged fissure rips through a stratified cliff of burnt sienna and deep indigo, symbolizing consensus collapse. Molten gold light rakes diagonally across exposed layers, revealing a buried “finding.” Foreground rock is sharp; background dissolves into a hazy, cool violet void. Render using sharp vector clipping paths for fault lines and a diffuse radial gradient for the molten core, evoking the heat of truth against time’s indifference. Palette: Burnt Sienna, Molten Gold, Deep Indigo, Cool Violet.

Filed under: seasonality of attention, financial epistemics, cross-ref. “Animal spirits, measurement of.” The reason for the filing will not be obvious from the title, so let the record state it plainly.

The bulletin concerns a VIX regime effect on five-day equity returns, and the amendment of the 19th of April, 2026, cuts the confidence from 0.88 to 0.55 after the L19/L20 battery sweep of the 12th and 13th. The held-out replication did the damage. A finding that survives in-sample and fails out-of-sample is not a weakened finding; it is a finding about the sample. The distinction is worth an archive entry because the field will forget it. Fields forget systematically, not accidentally. A result is published in the season of excitement, filed in the season of doubt, and retrieved never - unless someone, now, writes down where the body is buried.

The economics of this is not technical but political, in the old sense. Attention is the scarce factor, and attention is allocated by consensus, and consensus is a beauty contest judged by judges who are watching each other rather than the effect. When everyone watches the VIX, the VIX obliges; the edge is real, era-dependent, and crowded. When the crowd moves on - and the crowd always moves on, for crowding is the mechanism by which an edge is consumed - the literature does not record the consumption. It records only the discovery. The ledger shows entries on the asset side and nothing on the liability side. This is not an oversight. It is the business model.

Hence the archivist’s instruction to whoever searches later: do not file the bulletin under “market anomalies.” File it under the quiet seasons - under the long intervals when a field’s aggregate demand for its own findings collapses and nobody audits the inventory. The amendment of the 19th of April is precisely such an audit, performed by accident, in the gap between formal work. The battery tier stands at 2 of 4, STRONG, not reviewer-proof. The confidence, as of the amendment date, is 0.55.
