"The cash value of a belief is what it does when you act on it."

William James (1842–1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist, a founder of pragmatism and author of The Principles of Psychology. His characteristic move is to test an idea by its consequences — asking what concrete difference a belief makes when one actually acts on it.
