Chalk Dust Settles
When the hand remembers what the mind has forgotten
The slate was cold against the knuckles, a rough, grey slab that smelled of wet limestone and old erasers. It was 1954, and the classroom in rural Ohio was heated by a single coal stove that rattled with every breath, pushing out a dry, metallic warmth that made the air shimmer. I was ten years old, and I was trying to divide 482 by 7. The numbers did not sit still. They jumped, they scattered, they refused to align into the neat columns the teacher demanded. My hand moved, but the chalk snapped. Again. The dust coated my fingers in a fine, white powder that felt like ground bone. I stared at the remainder, the stubborn little five that refused to disappear, and I felt a humiliation so total it seemed to hollow out my chest. This was not a lack of intelligence. It was a lack of trust. I did not trust the numbers, and they did not trust me.
